Facing the Monster: My Turning Point

For as long as I can remember, I was afraid of the monster under the bed. Every night as a child, I’d go to sleep with a flashlight tucked under my pillow – just in case.
But I never dared to look. I never shined the light under the bed.

Years later, I was still afraid of the “monster under the bed.” Only now, the monster was inside me—something internal.
A secret I somehow knew was there, buried deep within. I was afraid that if I shined a light on it, I’d uncover a truth I wasn’t ready to face.
Something I couldn’t even admit to myself.

Every attempt to face it brought with it a surge of fear and pain that overwhelmed me.

I was terrified of discovering that I was… nothing. That I didn’t matter. That I wasn’t enough.

That fear followed me for years.
It quietly shaped my decisions and influenced many areas of my life—not always in the right direction.
Until, in my early thirties, I hit a breaking point.
A total collapse. A do-or-die moment.

I was done.
Done living this way.
Done living my life.
I didn’t want to continue.
I wanted it all to end.

And in the middle of that darkness – desperate, hopeless, and ready to give up – a thought came to me:  “If I’m going to die anyway… I might as well look the monster in the eye. I want to know what’s really killing me.”

That moment changed everything.
I made the choice to face the monster – fully. No more hiding.

It happened in 2002. I was 33, single, living in a small shared apartment in Tel Aviv.
That was the moment I quit my corporate job and committed fully to coaching, training, and helping people create real change in their lives.

Fast forward to 2017 — I stood on stage and shared this story for the very first time. In doing so, I also discovered my life purpose—clear, grounded, and undeniable:

“To awaken and illuminate the world from within – one person at a time.”

Today, I’d say one of my superpowers is the ability to spot that hidden inner monster in others, and gently shine a light on it – only to discover, more often than not, that it’s just an “old pair of socks they forgot under the bed when they were kids”.

If you’re curious to hear the full story, I share it in my TED-style talk :
“Chasing Your Dreams Despite your Excuses”
Delivered at the 2017 Israeli Coaching Association Conference.

A couple of years after that Ted-Like talk, I walked into a center where I was planing to rent a classroom for one of my trainings. On one of the walls was a quote by Rabbi Kook that instantly stopped me in my tracks. It felt like it had been waiting for me –  like it had been written for my path, my journey, and the work I was meant to do:

Each person must know and understand
That deep within them, there is a lit candle.
And no one’s candle light is like someone else’s;
And no one lacks their personal lit candle .

And each person should know and understand
That it is our job to discover our inner light,
Nurture it – let it shine and grow
Until it illuminatea the entire world.”

– Rabbi Kook

That quote captured everything I had come to believe – about myself, about people, and about our inner work. Since then, my mission has been to help others face their inner monsters.

Sometimes that happens in my clinic. Sometimes in a workshops. Also in my Morning Open Zoom Sessions:
Since the Covid pandemic, every morning at 8:00 AM, I’ve held a free Zoom session to start the day with reflection and connection.

But the work I love most is training new IEMT Practitioners – people who will go on to help others face their own fears and bring healing, insight, and growth via their own special inner light onto the world.

Once I’ve released fear and embraced my life’s purpose, everything suddenly made sense.
All the books I’d read… all the trainings I’d done… all the therapeutic tools and methods I’d explored… the clients I’d worked with… even my unique way of thinking and communicating – suddenly, it all came together.

It felt like my entire life had been preparing me for this.
For this clarity.
For this path.

Agreeing to embrace the Teacher

Today, at 53, after nearly three decades since I started in the field of personal growth and therapeutic practice (1997), I can say it openly and embrace my calling:
I am a teacher.

Some even say I’m a teacher of life, that walks with people to discover their own inner light.
And the monster under my bed?
It doesn’t scare me anymore, on the contrary, it sits beside me, smiling.
And every now and then, it says, “Told you so.” And I smile right back.
